Elbow Pain Treatment in Kangaroo Point, Brisbane
Elbow pain often comes from repeated gripping, typing or sport, but the cause can sit in the neck, shoulder or wrist. We assess the whole arm and upper body before planning treatment.
Common causes of elbow pain
- Tennis elbow (outer elbow) — pain where the forearm muscles attach on the outside of the elbow, common with typing, tools, racquet sports and gripping work.
- Golfer's elbow (inner elbow) — the same idea on the inside of the elbow, often from pulling, lifting or climbing.
- Neck and shoulder involvement — irritation in the neck or shoulder can refer pain to the elbow or make the forearm more sensitive.
- Joint stiffness or arthritis — the elbow joint itself can become stiff or grumpy after injury or with age.
How we assess elbow pain
We look beyond the sore spot. Your assessment covers the neck, shoulder, wrist and grip, how your arm moves under load, and the demands of your work or sport. Finding out whether the problem is the tendon itself, the joints around it, or referred pain from higher up changes what treatment should be.
What treatment involves
Treatment may include hands-on work to the forearm muscles and the joints of the neck, shoulder, elbow and wrist, plus a progressive loading program for the tendon where that's the issue. Tendons respond to graded exercise rather than rest alone, so we'll give you specific exercises and tell you what to modify at work or in training in the meantime.
When to see a doctor first
See your GP if the elbow is hot, swollen and red, if pain follows significant trauma, or if you notice numbness, weakness or fever. We can refer for imaging if a more serious injury is suspected.
