Hypnotherapy — Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is best described as a very deep state of relaxation — a stable, normal, natural, healthy state of mind. When in hypnosis, the conscious mind (that busy, critical, analytical part of the mind) takes a break, allowing you to tap into the "storeroom" of the subconscious mind and make positive changes to thought patterns, habits, pain, anxiety and grief.
Will I lose control while under hypnosis?
Absolutely not. Contrary to how hypnosis is sometimes portrayed in movies, you remain fully in control at all times. You generally stay aware of and remember what happens during hypnosis, and anything you hear that does not feel right for you, you can simply let float right on by.
How many sessions will I need?
Every client is different, but many clients need only 1-3 sessions for each issue they are experiencing. For smoking cessation, the 3-session package is usually enough. Fern will always be guided by you as to what feels right for your needs and goals.
What happens in a session?
Each session begins with a discussion about what you would like to work on, followed by a tailored hypnotherapy process and a post-session debrief. Depending on your preferences, we may create small activities for home, and you will receive a personalised recording to listen to for 28 days for the best results.
Can hypnotherapy help with trauma if I don't want to talk about it?
Yes. One of the wonderful things about hypnotherapy is that only a minimal amount of talking is required — Fern will do a lot of the talking while you relax. A range of psychotherapies that focus on the body and the mind allow you to experience change without reliving or discussing difficult experiences in depth.
