NECK & SHOULDER PAIN

Have You Got a Sore Neck?
When you have a lack of stability and strength in your back and shoulder muscles, it causes neck pain, stiffness, and cervicogenic (referred pain from the neck) headaches.
But what causes it? And how can Osteopathy help?
It might feel like the pain is coming from a problem with your neck – and it might be. But in most cases, neck pain is caused by an issue further down, in your middle to upper back and shoulders – where weak and unstable muscles are causing postural strain.
Postural strain is the stress your daily life places on your neck when you regularly use a desk or computer at the wrong height, sleep with more than one pillow, sit awkwardly at work, or spend all day looking at your smartphone.
It’s also caused by your body’s natural adaptation to accidents, injuries, repetitive movements, and historical surgeries. The resulting postural strain from these activities or injuries causes weak and shortened muscles, compressed nerves, and pain in the upper cervical spine and the neck.
For you, neck pain could be mildly uncomfortable. For others, severe and unrelenting daily neck pain, stiffness, and immobility limits their activity and leaves them unable to do much at all. You may also have headaches, migraines, shooting pains, and muscle spasms accompanying the pain.
It's there every time you turn your head – and it seems to get worse when you get into bed and try to sleep. Exercise aggravates it, but lying down hurts too. The gym and playing sport are out of the question – and you're popping pain pills every couple of hours to get through the day.
Does This Sound Like You?
If it does, don’t worry. Osteopathy can help you get your life back. We treat patients with neck pain all the time. It’s one of the most common pain problems we see in the Osteoworks clinic.
“But Why is This Happening to Me or Why Do I Still Have Neck Pain When I Have Been Resting and Taking It Easy For 6 Months+?”
Everyone has a sore neck sometimes (especially past a certain age), right? Wrong. Your neck and shoulders should be flexible, pain-free, and supple, regardless of age. But whether you're young or old or somewhere in between, the pain won't just disappear if you leave it. In most cases, it actually gets worse.
Have You Had Neck Pain For More Than Seven Days?
If you’ve had neck pain for longer than a week, you’ve probably already been to see your GP. They likely told you to rest, take anti-inflammatories, and take it easy. Then sent you home with, “Come back and see me if it doesn’t get better.”
Unfortunately, most of the patients we see end up back in their doctor's office (before they come to us), only to be told to take more painkillers and rest more — because things didn’t get better.
If You’ve Been Putting Up With Neck Pain For A Long Time, You’re Not Alone. We Hear These Types Of Statements From Patients All The Time
- "I thought the pain would go in time, but it just didn't."
- "I went to the Doctor, and they told me it was just getting old or arthritis."
- "I tried exercising through the pain, but it got even worse."
- "I saw a surgeon, but he said surgery was the last resort, and he would only operate when I couldn't stand the pain any longer."
- “I tried to rest it longer, even took time off the gym and work, but the pain is still the same.”
Do These Statements Sound Familiar to You?
If they do, you don't have to endure neck pain indefinitely. We can help.

What Can I Do to Get Rid of My Neck Pain Now?
If you have been in pain for a while, there is no immediate fix. It takes time. But you can reduce your pain and discomfort with these tips:
- Make sure you’re hydrated — dehydration can lead to stiffness, aches, and pains. Staying well-hydrated can reduce the severity of your symptoms.
- Try using heat therapy or an ice pack. Both can help reduce tension and pain in your neck. Choose whichever feels most comforting to you.
- Get up and move — avoid sitting for long periods, especially if you tend to slouch. Stand, stretch, and move around regularly.
- Get expert, “hands-on” Osteopathy — regular Osteopathic treatment is the best way to reduce pain and get rid of neck pain for good.
